The following information is provided to answer the most commonly asked questions regarding marriage/civil union ceremonies.
Do we need a marriage/civil union license?
Yes, you must obtain your license at least one day and no more than 60 days prior to your ceremony
How do we get the marriage/civil union license?
Licenses are obtained from the LaSalle County Clerk, 707 E. Etna Road, Ottawa, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both parties must appear and present proof of age and proper identification and a license fee of $30.00. When you apply for your license, you must provide the month, date and year of a prior divorce or dissolution, if applicable.
Is a blood test required?
No, a blood test is no longer required by law.
When are the marriages/civil unions performed?
Judges conduct marriage and civil union ceremonies from 1:00 – 1:30pm weekdays only. Please call (815) 434-0786 to arrange a date and time.
What type of ceremony is it?
The court will perform a private ceremony that takes about 10-15 minutes.
Is there a fee?
Yes, there is a $10.00 fee payable at the time of check-in for your ceremony.
Do we need to bring a witness?
No, witnesses are not necessary. Guests are welcome and invited to attend. Cameras are also welcome.
